Bespoke verse, rhymes and poems for special occasions

Feeling Festive

I think it’s fair to say that I’ve caught the styled shoot bug. My third styled shoot took place a few weeks ago, this time a Scandinavian Christmas wedding, set at Aston Hills Barn in Matlock. This one really got me in the festive mood and I’m sure you’ll see why!

A few years ago, my husband and I travelled to Finland just before Christmas and I was completely captivated by how magical it felt under the snow-capped trees. The only means of decoration they’d used were candles and fairy lights and yet it created the most romantic Christmas scene. It was this memory that inspired my poem titled ā€œA Wintry Romanceā€, which in turn formed the basis for this shoot.

Christmas is a time that’s full of magic and a Christmas wedding should be no different. I wanted to recreate the scene that inspired my poem to demonstrate that such magic doesn’t always have to involve tinsel and baubles. I pitched the idea to Bethan from Finishing Flourishes and together we came up with the idea of using elements from nature to transform the rustic barns at Aston Hill Farm into a winter wonderland. The barn was filled with pine trees and dusted with artificial snow. Playing on the literary aspect, Bethan also created some small pine tree table centrepieces from an old book.

The magical wintry wedding dress made by Ryley and Flynn Vintage featured a delicate pearl and crystal trim along the neckline and around the waist, dramatic cape sleeves, a floor length circle skirt and a stunning train. A detachable cape veil with crystal clasps completed the look.

Two verses of my poem were delicately hand-lettered onto two tall fabric backdrops by The Handmade Sign Company and hung perfectly either side of the aisle. The stationery, created by The Cheshire Calligrapher, also featured snow-dusted spruce to create a quiet elegance for the invitation suite. The jewellery and hair accessories, handmade by Crzy Best, were inspired by the line ā€œthe pine trees were sprinkled with glitterā€ and sparkled beautifully just like snow.

The simple yet elegant Scandinavian styled cake table from Little Chelly Cakes had just a hint of Christmassy red berry decoration and gold leaf. Perfectly complimenting the cake table were two pyrography wood slices with bespoke poems burnt by hand into the wood by Cowshed Creations.

The models, Kiana and Tom, are a real-life couple who have been married for ten years and have five children. They said of the shoot, ā€œThe day was incredible. It reminded us of how much love we share for each other and how strong we have become over time. We had such a laugh together and this shoot has inspired us to renew our vows with our children accompanying us to mark how our love has grown.ā€

Rosanna Lilly perfectly captured the true to life emotions of the couple through her beautiful photography and Karl from Mitchell Films paired Scandinavian Christmas visuals with spoken poetry from myself to create a magical short film that brings both tears to my eyes and a smile to my face every time I watch it.

I’m excited to say that the shoot has now been published in Boho Weddings just in time for Christmas! So, all that’s left to say is Merry Christmas everyone and a very Happy New Year.

Letters Of Love

If you’ve read my previous blog posts you’ll know that I’ve been teaming up with a number of different creative businesses to showcase ways in which to display poetry – paperless poetry as I’ve termed it. Over the last few months, I’ve also taken part in a number of styled wedding shoots, which have been fantastic for networking with other wedding suppliers and for showcasing my work. I feel like I’ve learnt a lot through doing all of this and so I decided it was time to put what I’ve learnt into practice and organise my own styled shoot.

I wanted create something romantic, elegant and full of words so I pitched an idea to various different wedding suppliers and last month we all came together at Shottle Hall in Derbyshire. Due to social distancing we couldn’t use models and so I invited real-life couple, Tina and Richard, to pose as the bride and groom and wow did they deliver. Their love for each other was clear for all to see on the day, so much so that it actually felt like a real wedding.

The suppliers who were on set on the day were in such high spirits and we all had so much fun. I actually felt quite emotional at several points – it was like the culmination of all my work over the last few years right before my eyes. My words were being showcased on fabric backdrops, on wooden signs, inside the wedding dress, even on the cake! Adele from Fly On The Wall Photography took some incredibly beautiful photos and Karl from Mitchell Films perfectly captured the day through film.

I was slightly nervous about organising my own shoot and was worried I would feel like an imposter amongst so many experienced and talented wedding suppliers. But I absolutely loved the whole experience and I will definitely be organising one again. To top it all off, I can reveal that the shoot has since been accepted for publication in Love My Dress, one of the top wedding blogs in the UK! I can’t wait to share more photos with you once the article has gone live.

ā€œMy bespoke poem for my wedding is everything I dreamed of and more. It’s so very special and I will treasure it forever. Thank you for understanding exactly what I wanted.ā€

"My grandparents were so touched with their poem, and everyone in the family has commented on how well Sally captured the essence of each of our relationships with them."

"I gave Sally a list of things that she did, memories, quirky things that only meant something to us. Sally took the time to speak to me and listen to the stories behind this list so that our poem would have meaning and not just be words on a piece of paper. The end result was amazing."

I have so many fond memories of my grandparents fr I have so many fond memories of my grandparents from when we were children. Whenever I feel a little bit sad, I take comfort from these memories. Most of them wouldn’t even seem that significant to everyone else...

Rubbing our hands on the herbs in their garden and trying to guess what they were. Colouring in old Christmas and birthday cards using crayons stored in a little drawer in the kitchen table. Dancing around to the built-in songs on the keyboard. Being threatened with having to sleep under the dining table if we didn’t stop messing about šŸ˜‚

Grandparents pass on knowledge and tell us stories of old. They have a special level of patience. They listen. They teach us things. Grandparents have an impact on our lives in ways we never really see or understand until we are grown.

This bridesmaid bouquet from @flowerkraut photogra This bridesmaid bouquet from @flowerkraut photographed by @arius_photography is just...wow! I spotted the photo when it was posted by @becomingone.co and I asked what the ivy like leaves were (I’m not very good with flowers and foliage šŸ™ˆ). Apparently they are nasturtium leaves. Aren’t they pretty? And the colour of the dress is almost identical to the dresses my bridesmaids wore šŸ’š
